What is Lawn Dethatching?
Our lawn dethatching service uses the power raking method to mechanically remove thatch from your lawn. It’s a routine service that removes debris, weeds, and general waste across your lawn, leaving behind only healthy grass.
Thick thatch in your lawn causes a host of problems that just get worse with time, meaning our lawn dethatching service is an excellent preventative measure that keeps your commercial property looking well-kept, managed, and professional all year round.
Along with our lawn dethatching services, we offer regular lawn maintenance services throughout the year…and all at highly competitive rates!
Benefits of Dethatching
Of all our lawn care services, dethatching offers some of the most wide-ranging preventative benefits for a procedure that, with the right tools, is fairly straightforward.
Using the power raking method, we’ll remove dead plant matter and other debris from your lawn and soil, which offers the following benefits:
- Improves the consistency and color of your lawn
- Removes patches
- Improve grass tolerance to drought and heat
- Prevent fungus build-up in the dead plant matter
- Prevent grass roots rooting upwards out of the soil and into the thatch
- Prevent pests from growing in the grass
- Allows water to more easily reach the soil
- Improves the effect of seeding and fertilizing

Lawn Dethatching/Power Raking FAQs
How do I know if I need dethatching?
An easy way to know if your lawn needs dethatching is by digging a small piece of your lawn using a trowel. Make sure it’s around three inches deep, and then check the sample to see if the thatch, or the bio debris above the soil, is more than 1.5cm in height. If it’s more than that, your lawn needs to be dethatched.
Do you provide Lawn Dethatching and aeration service both?
Sure! We offer a comprehensive lawn maintenance service. Starting with power raking, we’ll move on to ensure your lawn is properly fertilized, irrigated, and aerated. This simple process ensures that the soil can breathe, and fungus doesn’t have a chance to grow.
How can I check that you offer your power raking services near me?
We have Earth Development lawn maintenance teams across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri, and Michigan.
You can find a full list of every region and city we operate in across the Midwest right here on our website. If you’re still not sure, however, you can call our team and we’ll be happy to advise you.
How frequently does Earth Development provide services?
We typically service on a weekly basis, but this is also weather dependent. In times of drought (unless there is irrigation) we may skip services if they are not needed. If there is a rain day on your usual service day we will try to make up that date later in the week.
Bed Maintenance is usually done every other week, but can also be done weekly or monthly if preferred. More frequent service will ensure that your property is in the best possible condition at all times.
