When you live in Wisconsin, you know how important it is to stay on top of the winter weather. Knowing when to expect a winter storm helps you prepare your home and business, and also gives you an indication as to when you need to call your local snow contractor.

Winter storms may seem like they come from nowhere, but meteorologists usually know when they’re coming and, these days, it’s possible to predict them with a fairly good level of accuracy. There are tools out there that you can use to stay track of the weather in your region, and some steps you can take to make sure you’re always prepared.

Learn the Lingo from the Government Website

Reading the news and analyzing weather data available to you online only means as much as you understand, so it’s important to start learning terms like “Winter Storm Warning” and “Winter Weather Advisory.”

If you don’t already know the difference, now is the time to learn.

Thankfully, the government has a web page dedicated to helping you understand these terms and explaining what you should do to prepare for major storms. The Ready.Gov website lists great advice for protecting yourself during a winter storm and lists key terms you should know.

Use Weather Apps

There’s an app for pretty much anything these days, and that includes the weather! On your Google or Apple smartphone, head to either the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and search “weather” or “weather warnings.”

You’ll be presented with hundreds, if not thousands, of weather apps that offer varying levels of detail. Some are issued by private companies and some are developed in collaboration with world governments. Choose one based on the features you need and the reviews, and refer to it during the winter for updates.

Some apps will also give you customized notification options, allowing you to set notifications for weather warnings and temperature drops, so you know when to prepare for a major winter storm.

Be aware that free apps may be supported by ads, and the paid apps will typically have more features.

Winter Storm Severity Index

For something a little more experimental, try the Winter Storm Severity Index. This online tool helps you see how snowstorms could affect your area, and it’s the same tool used by many of your local officials.

Select your zoom area, and see a live graph showing the progress of storms and how badly they might hit your part of Wisconsin (or anywhere else in the United States!)

Stay Updated on Weather News

Sometimes you just can’t beat tuning in to the local weather news, whether that’s on TV or on news apps on your phone. You may also wish to sign up for weather updates from local news stations who will send you text messages or emails in the event that they recognize a major storm.

For as long as you have a phone in your pocket, you have everything you need to keep updated on the progress of winter storms and know when you need to be ready.
