The Minnesota winter is notoriously intense. At Earth Development, we work with companies in a variety of industries throughout the state and beyond, working with facility managers and business owners to keep roads, pavements, and parking lots clear.

We also assist our clients in understanding local Minneapolis snow shoveling rules and help every business stay compliant with all relevant regulations during the winter months.

It’s one of the reasons why our commercial snow plowing is such a sought-after service in the region.

Another reason why our services are so popular is because of the local laws and regulations that dictate how and when you clear snow.

It’s also important to know that as the owner or facility manager of a commercial property, you’re responsible for the sidewalk throughout the winter and not just when it snows. So, as the temperature drops, you’ll need to be conscious of water freezing on your outdoor surfaces and pavements.

At Earth Development, we understand these local rules well and our team of snow removal professionals can ensure that you are always in compliance.

    Helping You Avoid a Fine

Minneapolis Snow Rules for Commercial Facilities

We are often asked, “can you get fined for not shoveling snow,” and the answer is yes.

When a snow event ends, property owners either have four or 24 hours to clear the sidewalk. If the sidewalk is not cleared these properties may be reported through a 311 complaint, which could mean a fine. The processing and mail delivery for a fine can take up to three business days, and somewhere between days four and five, an inspector will visit the site to verify whether it has been cleared as is required under Minneapolis Ordinance 445.20.

If the site is still non-compliant, a work order is then issued. The property owner will then be billed for the work and any unpaid bills are added to the business owner’s property tax bill as a special assessment.

The way to avoid these fines is simple – stay compliant!
